Medical imaging radiation causes DNA damage and cancer; doctors prescribe more!

(NaturalNews) The health risks associated with radiation exposure, whether it comes from cancer treatments or medical imaging scans, are much more significant than most people probably think. The latest published data on radiation exposure suggests that roughly 25,000 Americans develop cancer every year as a result of medical radiation exposure, and many more experience DNA damage that could eventually lead to the development of cancer and other health problems in the long term.

Every year, millions of Americans opt to undergo computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and X-ray scans for medical purposes, thinking that by doing so, they are keeping up with the latest technologies in advanced medical care. But each time medical patients get one of these scans, their bodies sustain varying levels of ionizing radiation, the negative effects of which can take years to manifest as they build up cumulatively over time.

CT scans, which are a relatively modern medical imaging technology, are particularly problematic as they emit far higher doses of radiation than traditional x-rays do. Based on the figures, a single CT scan can blast up to 500 times the amount of radiation released by a single x-ray, an astounding level when considering how gratuitously CT scans are administered within the medical profession today.

In a new study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), it is reported that the use of all medical imaging scans, including CT scans, has risen dramatically between 1996 and 2010. The use of CT scans in particular, more than tripled during this time, which is in large part responsible for doubling the proportion of patients now receiving what is considered to be “high” or “very high” radiation doses on a regular basis.

Failing to recognize the long-term health consequences of repeated and perpetual exposure among their patients, many doctors needlessly order CT scans for patients who do not need them, or order multiple scans when only one is necessary. Data compiled from outpatient claims filed through Medicare, for instance, reveals that CT scans are routinely overused at hundreds of hospitals across the country, and that patients are needlessly “double scanned” more than 80 percent of the time. The high cost of CT scanning equipment has also led to an epidemic of unnecessary CT scans at private practices as well. Because they know that, most of the time, insurance companies and government health programs will reimburse them, many doctors simply default to CT scans whenever there is even a remote possibility that they might be useful — and oftentimes these doctors double-up on scans as well, even though this is almost never medically necessary.

“Double scans expose patients to extra radiation while heaping millions of dollars in extra costs on an already overburdened Medicare program,” wrote Walt Bogdanich and Jo Craven McGinty in the NYT, concerning CT scan abuse within government healthcare.

Besides the added costs to the medical system, medical imaging overuse is destroying the physical health of many Americans. According to data compiled by Jane Brody over at the New York Times (NYT), radiation exposure from medical scans now accounts for 1.5 percent of all cancers that occur in the U.S. Based on figures released by the American Cancer Society (ACS), this translates to about 24,583 Americans that develop cancer every year as a result of Western medicine. “All imaging has increased, but CTs account for the bulk of it,” said Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a specialist in radiology and biomedical imaging at the University of California – San Francisco (UCSF) to the NYT. “There’s clearly widespread overuse. More than 10 percent of patients each year are receiving very high radiation exposures.”

Despite their known dangers, CT and other risky imaging scans are often pushed on patients by doctors who refuse to provide care unless patients submit to their orders. Presumably to protect themselves against litigation, many doctors will insist that their patients undergo multiple imaging scans in order to confirm a medical condition, even when doing so puts patient safety at risk.

Fortunately, many health insurers are now taking notice of this rampant abuse, and are putting policy measures in place to discourage it. These include requiring preauthorizations before patients can receive scans, for instance, or restricting who can administer the scans, and on what types of equipment.

Americans may be less optimistic about the future in general than they once were, but a solid majority still hopes to enjoy a long life. In fact, longevity is considered by most as part of a good life, on par with health, prosperity and loving relationships.

According to a survey conducted by David Ewing Duncan, a science writer and author of When I’m 164: The New Science of Radical Life Extension and What Happens If It Succeeds, 60 percent of Americans expect to live at least until they’re 80. 40 percent think 120 to 150 years could be feasible within their own lifetime due to further advancements in medical and biological technology and one percent believes that death could eventually be eliminated altogether.

Considering that two thirds of the population are currently dealing with weight problems and a host of lifestyle-related diseases, this may be wishful thinking for many. But the fact is that the average life expectancy has indeed dramatically increased over the last century due to improved hygiene, diet and medical care. In 1900, people could expect to live just under 50 years. In the year 2000, it was nearly 77. The average lifespan was lengthened between 1.5 and 2.7 years per decade, according to data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau.

What’s even more stunning is that our chances of living longer seem to go up all the time. How so- “Because the more time you spend in the world, the more time the world gives you,” says Ted C. Fishman, author of Shock of Gray (Scribner, 2010). “For every hour we live,” he claims, “the average human lifespan increases between eleven and fifteen minutes. Every day sees the average lifespan grow another five hours.”

Of course, that doesn’t apply for everyone across the globe, Fishman admits. “Your odds are better if you have avoided the obesity epidemic and live in a place that enjoys good health care, education and freedom from war and terrible poverty.” It also helps if you can manage to stay mentally fit and don’t suffer from memory loss and cognitive decline. A loving family, a circle of friends and other supportive social surroundings add to your chances.

Unfortunately, many of these important factors for longevity cannot be taken for granted. Baby boomers, now entering retirement, are rightly worried about their prospects when it comes to their financial security, health needs and social life.

“It does not bode well for the baby boom generation at all,” warns Dr. S. Jay Olshansky, a professor for public health at the University of Illinois at Chicago who studies longevity, in an interview with Reuters. More recent studies show that life expectancy gains in the U.S. have actually flattened out since the 1960s. Despite of dramatically increasing expenditures for health care, many Americans live with chronic diseases that are left insufficiently treated, especially among the uninsured and those with limited coverage. One study concluded that poorer citizens have on average a shorter lifespan of up to five years than the more affluent.

Obviously, money can’t buy everything and life remains an uncertain enterprise no matter how rich you are. For the rest of us, there are plenty of opportunities to take care of our health and well-being by eating right, exercising, etc. (you know the drill) — and for this, it’s never too early to get started.

Researchers found that physical fitness achieved during middle-age can lower the risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure in later years and may be associated with compression of morbidity at old age. Compression of morbidity is what many health experts consider the optimal outcome of aging. The idea is “to delay the onset of age-related disease and inevitable decline without worrying about extending life,” writes Dr. Andrew Weil, author of numerous best-selling health books, including “Healthy Aging” (Knopf, 2005). Not longevity itself should be our first concern, but the quality of life we have as long as we are around, he says.

This reminds me of the late Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Inc., who died last year at the age of 56. He spoke of the inevitability of death at his 2005 Stanford Commencement Address: “No one wants to die,” he said. “Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one ever escaped it. And that is as it should be because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. [...] Your time is limited,” he ended, “so don’t waste it…”

Even the longest life can be a waste if it’s not brought to its full potential. Even the shortest life is rich and fulfilled if it’s lived well.

Obama punishes Americans with another trillion-dollar deficit (four in a row)

(NaturalNews) As a presidential candidate in 2008, Sen. Barack Obama characterized outgoing-President George W. Bush as “unpatriotic” for adding $4 trillion to the national debt during his eight-year tenure.

In a campaign speech to supporters July 3, Obama said:

“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents – number 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back – $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.

“Hope” and “change” were Obama’s campaign themes, not “more of the same.” It won him the White House.

What a difference four years make.

To be sure, $4 trillion is a lot of debt, and the president, as a candidate, was right to point out the obvious – if the current generation of voters and lawmakers fail to do the responsible thing and begin working together to pay it off, we will saddle our children with it, and sentence them – and their children – to a life of less freedom and fewer opportunities.

It’s just too bad he didn’t take his own rhetoric to heart.

Hypocrisy, sure, but that’s beside the point

Under Obama’s watch, the U.S. has added nearly $5 trillion in new debt over the course of about three-and-a-half years – a single term – while Bush’s debt was spread out over two terms, making Obama’s the largest accumulation of new debt over the shortest amount of time in the history of the country. Moreover, this year’s budget adds another $1.1 trillion, making it the fourth year in a row the government has run a $1 trillion-plus deficit.

The strategy from the White House and Democratic talking heads has been to dodge responsibility and lay all of it at Bush’s feet, arguing that the recession they inherited was “worse than we thought.” But the recession, we are told, ended in 2009, and Obama’s efforts since to restart the country’s economic engine have fallen flat; his stimulus packages and other economic incentives have not only failed to substantially reduce the unemployment rate, but they have also done virtually nothing to stimulate economic growth, which remains anemic at two percent a year or less. The little growth that has occurred in the economy has literally come in spite of Obama.

What’s more, the president has “owned” three of the last four fiscal years, making his policies, not Bush’s, the driving factor behind the debt increases which have occurred on his watch. If Bush has to own up, Obama has to own up.

So, does that make him “unpatriotic” as well-

Honestly, who cares- The characterization was political theater when Obama said it, and it’s political theater now.

Time is literally running out

The point is we have a debt problem, ladies and gentlemen of Congress, and it is imperative, regardless of which party you belong to, that you solve the problem and stop adding to it.

That will require reviving the lost art of statesmanship and putting the country before your own political careers.

Reducing the dialogue to pointless and inane trivialities will not address what is coming: $16 trillion in overall debt by Election Day, maybe another $5 trillion by 2016 if nothing changes, thereby creating, according to the Congressional Budget Office, a fiscal situation that is simply not sustainable.

“The key issue facing policymakers is not whether to reduce budget deficits,” says Doug Elmendorf, director of the CBO. “The question is when. The question is how.”

Options are few, he says, and none of them are going to be palatable, either to the politicians who must come together and decide on a course of action or to a sizable and growing portion of the American public , whom many of those same lawmakers have turned into a dependency class in order to buy their votes.

“Now, Congress and Mr. Obama are grappling with 2013 and beyond, and CBO said their options range from immediate belt-tightening and a double-dip recession that clears the economic and fiscal air, to continuing to pump money into the economy and delay, but likely worsen, an eventual reckoning,” The Washington Times reported.

Our “leaders” have painted the nation into an economic corner, Elmendorf notes.

“At some point, we will need to adopt policies that require people to pay significantly more in taxes, accept substantially less in government benefits and services, or both,” he said.

And with each new deficit, the problem grows larger, while the options fewer.

The debt clock is ticking. Like a time bomb.

Another nail within the coffin for statin drugs – New research finds statins increase artery calcification

(NaturalNews) In yet another blow to the claimed benefits of statin drugs, newly published research has found that statin drug use leads to accelerated coronary artery and aortic artery calcification, both of which greatly contribute to cardiovascular disease and mortality. The new study comes on top of findings that led the FDA to mandate adding “diabetes risk” to the warning label of statin drugs.

Statin drugs cause problems they are marketed to solve

The latest discovery makes it clear that statin drugs not only carry a significant risk of developing type 2 diabetes, they also accelerate the cardiovascular complications associated with diabetes. This has to be particularly disconcerting to the pharmaceutical companies since they have been marketing statins to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, not accelerate it.

According to Dr. Arthur Agatston, cardiologist and author of the South Beach diet books, coronary calcium is the best predictor of who will have a heart attack and who will not. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that coronary calcium was six times more accurate in predicting an impending heart attack than the risk factor of a family history of coronary heart disease.

In the new research, just published in the journal Diabetes Care, researchers looked at patients with type 2 diabetes and advanced atherosclerosis and found that coronary artery calcification “was significantly higher in more frequent statin users than in less frequent users.” Further, the researchers looked at a subgroup of participants who were not initially receiving statins and found that “progression of both CAC [coronary artery calcification] and AAC [aortic artery calcification] was significantly increased in frequent statin users.”

The initial premise used to market statin drugs was that they lowered cholesterol and cholesterol led to clogged arteries and heart attacks. That premise has been roundly discredited and the fact is that there has never been a single study which has proven that increased cholesterol levels cause heart attacks or other coronary problems.

Increasingly, it is being demonstrated that inflammation is the real culprit in arterial plaque. As NaturalNews recently reported, regardless of the amount of cholesterol in the blood, inflammation will result in the depositing of cholesterol to repair arteries damaged by inflammation.

Combat cancer with the head cancer-fighting foods

Kale

Kale contains phytochemicals called isothiocyanates that may inhibit tumor growth. These chemicals may also stop substances that cause cancer from getting to their targets. Kale contains nitrogen compounds called indoles that can help prevent a conversion of certain lesions into cancer cells in estrogen-sensitive tissues.

Mushrooms

Several types of mushrooms help to boost the immune system and may aid the body in its fight against cancer. These mushrooms include:

  • Coriolus versicolor
  • Maitake
  • Reishi
  • Shiitake

Diet modifications may not be a cancer cure, but they can assist other natural cancer treatments. Unnecessary cardiac procedures being performed by greedy doctors, whistleblower reveals

(NaturalNews) Imagine being admitted to the hospital and told that you need to have a stent surgically installed in your body to treat a blocked artery, only to later learn after the surgery that you were just fine, and that your doctor was simply trying to generate more profits for the hospital system. This is precisely what one whistleblower has come forward and said is happening within the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) system, the largest for-profit hospital chain in the U.S.

C.T. Tomlinson is a nurse that used to work at the Lawnwood Regional Medical Center (LRMC) in Fort Pierce, Florida, that is until he came forward with allegations that at least one doctor at his facility had been performing phony cardiac surgeries on healthy patients. After filing a complaint with HCA’s chief ethics officer Stephen Johns, it was determined that a number of doctors and surgeons within the HCA system had been performing unnecessary cardiac procedures on healthy patients since at least 2002.

In a private memo that was apparently not intended for public release, Johnson admitted that Tomlinson’s claims were substantiated, and that unnecessary cardiac procedures were routinely occurring throughout HCA, based on evidence compiled as part of an internal investigation. Thousands of patients appear to have underwent invasive surgeries when they did not actually need them, according to the review, and many of them became severely injured or died as a result.

The bulk of these unnecessary surgeries appears to have taken place at HCA hospitals throughout Florida, where the population of elderly, retired individuals is generally higher than it is in other parts of the country. HCA hospitals in or near the cities of Tampa, Miami, and Port St. Lucie have all been named in the investigation as harboring corrupt doctors and surgeons that perform unneeded surgeries.

Despite admitting the severity of the problem, HCA is reportedly unwilling to show that it properly notified Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance companies about its findings, which is required under the law. The group also appears to have shirked its responsibility to notify the patients that may have had unnecessary surgeries at its hospitals, even though these individuals are likely entitled to compensation and damages.

Meanwhile, thousands of pages’ worth of internal emails and memos exchanged between HCA executives reveal that, rather than being concerned about the well-being of its patients in the midst of the controversy, HCA officials have been more concerned about the hospital system’s profits and bottom line. And many of the doctors that have been outed as fraudsters are still working at HCA hospitals.

And it will go downhill and get nastier from there.

This is Nixon’s dirty-tricks war all over again. But instead of having a few million dollars in a slush fund, Gates has billions at his disposal.

He’s going to use surrogates to do his work for him, so it will be difficult, in many cases, to know where the attacks are coming from. That’s how cowards operate. They slink around behind the scenes and let other people do the heavy lifting.

The last thing they want is an honest and open debate about the issue itself. That would expose them. The truth would expose them.

Gates is obviously out to create an atmosphere and set a tone for legislation that would make vaccination mandatory everywhere, with no exemptions allowed. That’s what he’s shooting for. That’s his wet dream, the one that goes hand in glove with depopulation, his mountaintop desire.

The press, as always, will be on his side. They were on his side by giving short shrift to the explosive story out of India, where 47,000 cases of paralysis were caused by his polio vaccine.

He intends to create his very own Surveillance State, in which the targets are all Internet reporters and groups that have dug up the real facts about vaccines. The facts the medical cartel wants to hide in their vaults: vaccine deaths, paralysis, maiming, brain damage, autism, immune dysfunction…

He wants to create a chilling effect, for those who are thinking about covering the vaccine issue honestly.

Well, here’s a newsflash. Those facts are already out there, on thousands and thousands of sites. The horse left the barn years ago.

He’s late to the party, but he’s going to throw a lot of money at the problem. Essentially, he’s opting for suppression of accurate journalism. Like so many before him, once he wrangled his fortune in the free market (-), he turned around and realized he didn’t want a semblance of freedom anymore. He only wanted control.

Use EFAs to cut back inflammation and support your adrenals

(NaturalNews) EFAs are essential fatty acids, which we need to live but our bodies cannot create. So we need take EFAs from outside sources.

Omega-3 minimizes inflammation while providing other health benefits. Fish or fish oils, especially cold water fish, ground flax seeds consumed shortly after grinding in a coffee grinder, flax seed oil, chia seeds, walnuts and walnut oil are predominantly omega-3 sources.

The alpha linolenic acid (ALA) of plant based omega-3 converts into two other omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, if other nutrients are readily available. That’s one reason why some prefer the fish or fish oil sources that already have EPA and DHA present. It certainly won’t hurt to use both sources.

Keep in mind that well over half our brain tissue is composed of fats while our nervous system contains even more fats. All our cell walls are lipid (fat) walled. If they weren’t, we would melt in the rain.

Omega-3 fatty acids help create cell walls that are fluid and elastic, yet strong enough to hold things together. The ALA offspring of EPA and DHA are vital to brain and eye health.
